Detailed Game Board for D&D: Completed

I wanted to build a custom layout for a D&D encounter, but with additional detail than we usually have. This would be used with the usual 28 mm miniature figurines to represent the player's characters.

This model measures 22" wide x 16" deep and features over 30 separate models I built from scratch. Materials used include XPS foam, balsa wood floors, Palight PVC board for the tiles, Sculpey clay, LED lights for the torch sconces, Deep Pour Water effects, and styrene tubes and sheets. Plus a juice can for the tower, and a few other small bits.

Backstory: Alchemist Continues His Work After Death

Picture a D&D encounter where your characters find their way to an alchemist's laboratory. They enter into a study area filled with books, scrolls and potions. But down the stairs they can see machines and vats connected with pipes, and the scene of a gruesome murder. It's their job to prevent further carnage, by dismantling this intricate trap while confronting a powerful enemy. The alchemy lab is occupied by a D&D monster known as a "brain-in-a-jar," the undead remains of a wizard-alchemist.

There are at least a dozen valves and other control devices throughout the layout. These could be included as part of the story. For example, the player characters might sense that they need to stop the flow of fluid to a certain machine, and they need to work together to figure out which valve to turn.

  1. Looks amazing. The new things that you added since I last saw it really pulls the composition together. Also the sconces are awesome they give it a really cool and creepy ambiance. There are so many amazing details in this that you really do have to look at it for at least 15-30 minutes to fully appreciate all the work and craft that you put into it (about as long as a DnD encounter takes? haha)
